Survey Shows Americans are Entertaining More than Ever
Five creative ideas for unforgettable get-togethers at home
(ARA) - Americans love to entertain! Whether preparing a delicious home cooked meal from scratch or dialing up the pizza delivery man, we are opening up our homes more often.
The fifth annual Lenox Gift-Giving and Etiquette survey revealed a 50 percent increase from last year in the number of Americans who entertain two or more times a month. With Americans entertaining so regularly, it's no surprise that easy elegance and creativity are the two most common ingredients in party planning. The survey found that when entertaining, we prefer to cook up a home-made meal (88 percent), throw a casual barbecue (78 percent), or order take-out (55 percent) rather than host an elaborate gathering.
Denise Dinyon, Lenox gift-giving and etiquette expert, has developed five inspired ideas to take any simple gathering and make it sensational.
1. Beautiful Buffets -- A perfectly set table is a joy to behold, but crystal, silver and fine china look even more lovely when placed on a buffet with steaming serving dishes and platters full of family favorites. Display your creative side by accessorizing the buffet with greenery, found objects and sparkling votives.
2. Wine Tasting Party -- You can sample white, red, sparkling, or for the adventurous, all three. Progress from lighter to fuller-bodied wines to ensure that one wine doesn't overpower the other. To cleanse the palate, serve tasty appetizers like fruits, vegetables and cheese and crackers on a beautiful silver tray.
3. Viewing Party -- TV, movie or sports viewing parties are the latest trend because they're a fun way to get the whole gang together. To make the most of your viewing experience, create a menu that evokes the spirit of the city where the action takes place, complete with wines and foods that are native to the region.
4. Take-Out in Style -- You can still be an accomplished hostess even if you're not the cook! When entertaining with take-out, create a tablescape that carries the theme of the food ordered. For example, kick Chinese food up a notch by setting the table with silver fortune cookie place card holders. Place silly pictures rather than name cards in each for a fun night that will be remembered
5. Bring the Barbecue Inside -- Even if it's chilly outside, you can bring the good times indoors with a fun-filled and stylish barbecue. Indoor grills make cooking steaks, fresh fish, and other culinary delights formerly banished to the warmer months easy, and clean up simple. Decorate your table with exotic hot-house blooms to bring the tropics to your dining room.
Entertaining doesn't need to be formal -- only fun. Adding unexpected touches and personal flair makes it possible for everyone from the novice to the veteran to do it in style, but more importantly often.
